Why did I get an error message when paying my invoice by credit card?

Occasionally, you may encounter an error message when paying your invoice by credit card. This is typically because your credit card information was incorrectly entered or because your credit card is invalid.

Here are the error messages you may see and the steps you can take for each one:
  • The card number is not a valid credit card number: Re-enter your credit card number and try again.
  • The card's expiration month is invalid: Enter a valid expiration month (use the two-digit format MM, e.g. 01 for January) and try again.
  • The card's expiration year is invalid: Enter a valid expiration year (use the two-digit format YY, e.g. 19 for 2019) and try again.
  • The card's security code is invalid: Enter a valid CVC security code (use the 3-digit security code on the back of a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover or the 4-digit code on the front of an American Express)
  • The card number is incorrect: Re-enter your credit card number and try again.
  • The card has expired: Use a different card that has not expired.
  • The card's security code is incorrect: Re-enter your CVC security code (use the 3-digit security code on the back of a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover or the 4-digit code on the front of an American Express)
  • The card was declined: This generally happens if your CVC security code is incorrect (see above), your bank's automated fraud protection was overzealous, or your account had insufficient funds. Use a different, valid credit card or contact your bank for more information.
  • An error occurred while processing the card: Re-enter your credit card information and try again.
When your credit card payment is successful, you will be taken to a Thank You page that states, "Your payment was successfully completed." You'll also receive a confirmation email containing your invoice. If you continue to see an error message after following the above steps, try again with a different, valid credit card or contact our support team at support@submittable.com.
